As far as Solodex seasons go, the 2007 season was an early one. With just a few short weeks to Carnival 07, twenty-five competitors took leave of the wine and jam season to do battle under the blazing sun. The 07 season was off to what many felt might be a predictable season. All the 06 class championship winners seemed set to pick up where they left off.

The course was designed by head of Solodex, Karl Winchester. It was a nice mix of fast straights, sweeping curves, and a few tight sections, all built around a fast roundabout, which was to be navigated from both directions. A challenging course indeed, and even with walk through and drive through sessions, many a regular competitor found it to be a handful. Not so for the novices though. Both Novice class winner Vishnu Charran and second-timer Kirby Singh aced their first three runs, and only DNF’d their final runs from pushing too hard to find more time, than from getting lost. Second place finisher, Jonathan Fifi in his Nissan Almera did well to challenge Vishnu’s Mazda MX3, finishing just 0.259 seconds behind. Drag racing heroine Genevieve Singh threw her hand in with a well deserved 3rd place , emulating 2006’s female champion

An even tighter battle was fought in the popular HS class, once again dominated by family station wagons, and a friendly Honda Fit. A mere 0.414 seconds separated first from fourth place. Continuing in Kirk Ho Hing’s tradition, Scott Dopson took Casper the friendly Wagon to first place, ahead of veteran SiR William Barrow (proudly flying the Honda banner) and Karl Winchester.

The ES class was down to two competitors, class favorite Karen Pinheiro and Rayard Hosein. With class bullies Amir Hosein and Ryan Ramsaran elevating themselves to ESP class, Rayard had a chance to win in ES. Amir went on to turn the tables on his 06 rival, Ryan by finishing ahead. However, in the midst of this battle, Vaughn Callendar cruised to a commanding class win in his Rover 216.

SS and EP classes saw the fastest cars of the day. The Waddell clan had the SS class all to themselves and their motorcycle engined Lotus Super7 replica. Porsche Waddell bested dad Everad for the win….must be something to do with the name. In EP, Ryan Pinheiro trounced the competition in his monster VW Golf GTi, and also posting fastest time of the day.

The final class was GS, where the newest car was 22 years old. Never a dull moment, 2006 class runner up Sanjay Singh took command from the start, and never looked back. Kevin Singh and Alan Rajkumar-Maharaj decided to fight for second place, both posting a pair of DNFs before getting the hang of the course.

With the last competitor off the course, the fun runs began. Narend ‘Mr. Zorce’ Sooknarine did his usual best to thrill the crowd with some very fast runs, some very sideways drifts, some very expensive tyre smoke, and some ridiculous grins. Needless to say, everyone who took part knew why these were called ‘fun runs’.
